|
Triple-A Baseball, consisting of two Leagues at Minor League Baseball's highest classification, is made up of 30 teams throughout America which develop talent for Major League affiliates while providing affordable entertainment for fans of all ages. From Sacramento to Charlotte, Triple-A Baseball is played in cities with cumulative MSAs of nearly 40 million people. Attendance in Triple-A ballparks has risen from 9.5 million in 1990 to over 14.2 million in 2007!
Triple-A Baseball's senior circuit is the International League, which will enter its 125th consecutive season of operation in 2008. The IL spans from Pawtucket to the east, Indianapolis to the west, and Charlotte to the south. The 2008 campaign will mark the 105th season of operation for the IL's counterpart, the Pacific Coast League. The PCL has an expansive geography, stretching primarily west of the Mississippi River to include cities from Nashville to Sacramento and New Orleans to Tacoma.
The Triple-A Baseball season is highlighted by two nationally televised events. Each July, the best players from the two Leagues compete in the Triple-A All-Star Game. The three-day event, showcasing one of Triple-A's multi-million dollar ballparks, also includes a fan fest, media events, and the Triple-A Home Run Derby. The season concludes in Oklahoma City with the Bricktown Showdown, a one-game winner-take-all finale between the champions of each League.
Nearly every current Major League standout spent time playing in Triple-A, including Barry Bonds, Ryan Howard, Manny Ramirez, Alex Rodriguez, and Johann Santana. Triple-A Baseball has produced many of the game's all-time greats throughout the years. Over 160 former Triple-A players, managers, umpires, and executives are enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY, including such legends as Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson, Babe Ruth, and Ted Williams.
